Instructions for Taking First Shenghua Decoction 服用第一方 生化湯注意事項

What is Shenghua Decoction

Shenghua decoction is a common decoction used for treating poor postpartum bleeding, blood stasis and internal blocking, which can regulate uterine contraction in order discharge unpeeling mucosa or blood clots from the uterine, help the discharge of postpartum bleeding, reduce postpartum abdominal pain, prevent postpartum infections,  prevent thrombosis and help the uterine to recover its function. It is one common decoction frequently taken by people in Taiwan.

What are the indications?

  • Shenghua decoction applies to incomplete postpartum bleeding, abdominal pain, or vaginal hemostasis; or the abdominal pain and bleeding as well as syndromes from miscarriage and abortion.
  • Clinical observations show that taking Shenghua decoction can indeed boost bleeding and promote blood circulation in pelvis. Ask professional traditional Chinese medicine doctors to prescribe Shenghua decoction for sustained postpartum abdominal pain, blood clots in postpartum bleeding, waist ache or long-term/continuous postpartum bleeding, or abrupt stop of postpartum bleeding while the abdominal pain continues (mostly because of taking food supplement too early).  

How to take it?

  • Some women may experience dizziness, abnormal bleeding, and wound pain during the postpartum period. Taking Shenghua decoction is not recommended if without the consultation of the doctor. Generally, the use of Shenghua decoction is recommended to begin in 1-3 days after vaginal delivery, and 3-5 days after Cesarean delivery. The prescription is indicated when there are no other postpartum complications.
  • Shenghua decoction is known for “boosting” circulation and “dissolving” stasis but only apply to dissolve blood stasis. Most of postpartum puerpera have the physique of “weakness and stasis” and hence do not take Shenghua decoction for long. It is suggested for natural birth to take 7~10 decoctions and in general 5-7 decoctions for C-section, in order to meet the purpose of uterine contraction and discharge of postpartum bleeding.  Taking Shenghu for too long will on contrary leave the sequela of residual postpartum bleeding.

What are the Contraindications?

  • Stop taking Shenghua decoction in case of abnormal postnatal bleeding, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, and fever from infection, influenza, and odor with postpartum bleeding, and other syndromes. The doctors will need to diagnose and provide an additional prescription. After taking Shenghua decoction for some period of time, the doctor will also need to modify the prescription depending on the recovery of puerperal.

Reminders

  • Shenghua decoction may be a common medication but it still requires the prescription from the doctors before taking. Doctors will prescribe the amount of dosage and medicine in Shenghua decoction according to the postpartum bleeding, uterine contraction and systematic symptoms, for the most effective.
