Metabolic syndrome refers to persons with at least three out of the five indicators, including central obesity (thick waistline), blood pressure, blood sugar, high TG, and lack of good cholesterol. Chinese medicine suggests that excessive eating and few exercises are the two major causes of “metabolic syndrome.” Excessive eating refers to the consumption of food high in carbohydrate and fat, which could impede the operation of the qi function of body while the lack of activities affects the healthy operation of spleen. The stagnation of depression in qi function of liver and spleen is the core pathogenesis of the disease. If the transportation of essence of food and water is abnormal, it will turn into sputum and block the meridian, thereby producing heat from depression and creating heat leading to depletion. The deletion will form body damage. This is the main line for metabolic syndrome and the development of complications.

WHAT IS DEPRESSION?

Uncontrolled food and drink consumption, and food high in carbohydrate and fat, could impede the qi function of spleen and stomach, forming obstructed spleen qi. Spleen and stomach is the hub of qi function. Once the spleen and stomach qi is stagnated, food indigestion and poor essence transportation will disturb body fluid distribution to become damp and phlegm. The affect-mind dissatisfaction will lead to depression of liver qi. Liver is in charge of excretion and conditions the qi function. Once the liver qi is stagnated, qi and blood circulation will become difficulty. At this stage, obstructed spleen qi and depressed liver qi formed the main root of cause.

WHAT IS HEAT?

Uncontrolled food and drinks will generate stomach heat, affect-mind dissatisfaction leading to liver heat and intestinal heat due to constipation. Heat and phlegm consolidate into phlegm-heat, heat and blood consolidate into blood-heat, and heat and damp consolidate into damp-heat. At this stage, the patient usually experiences anxiety, emotional disturbance, acne, pruritus, and itchiness, filthy breathy, abdominal bloating, obstructed bowel movement, or offensive smelling stool from diarrhea, as well as other syndromes.

WHAT IS DEPLETION?

Heat will deplete qi and damage yin, resulting in double damage in qi and yin. At this stage, the patient could experience fatigue, weariness, and lack desire to speech. The patient will also perceive torrid heat in the afternoon and red cheeks, who is likely to sweat at night. The syndrome could further develop into damage in yin and yang, while the depletion of both yin and yang will result in weak and aching waist and foot, as well as weakness and fear for cold.

WHAT IS DAMAGE?

Damage refers to the obstructed qi and blood circulation that leads to bruises in meridian and obstructed bruise, which could become the foundation causing damage and imbalance in body organs, and further lead to the various imbalances of metabolism in the body. The generation of variation could produce strokes, cardiovascular failure, renal diseases and severe complications threatening life or affecting quality of life.

HOW DO I CARRY OUT CONDITIONING AND CARE?

The conditioning of metabolic syndrome lies on eating and exercises since excessive eating and lack of exercises are the two major contributions to the disease. Balanced food is necessary and excessive eating should be avoided. Eat food with moderate flavor and can be easily digested. Greasy food should be avoided. Emphasize on limb exercises to smooth the spleen qi, so that the spleen and stomach function property while the body fluid can circulate without obstruction.

Food therapy can be used for physical conditioning in life, which improves the physique of metabolic syndrome. For example, lotus leaf porridge and winter gourd porridge can benefit the spleen qi. Pria cocos and lily porridge, glutinous rice and almond porridge and lotus leaf and hawthorn tea can clear the phlegm while carp soup can improve dampness and replenish damage of depletion. Seek for advice and suggestions regarding the body conditions from the Chinese medicinal doctors. Nonetheless pay attention not to overkill food therapy, since excessive eating it the essential cause of metabolic syndrome. The deliberately excessive eating will result in adverse effect. Such therapy should be blended into life to replace partial main course or side dishes to go a long way.

Moreover, some research shows that the guidance of qigong such as Wai-Tan-Kung, TaiChi, Ba Duan Jin, are practices of health care and qi conditioning in Chinese medicine that will benefit the health of people who could not engage in high-intensity exercises more due to body conditions, compared to simple and light exercises.. These practices should be recommended to the public.

Familiarize with the five indicators of metabolic syndrome and pay attention to the conditions of other indicators if any of the indicators appears in the body. Moreover, the patient should cooperate with doctors from Division of Cardiology or Division of Endocrinology & Metabolism, to develop the life style of eating less and exercise more. Drive less and walk more to prevent diseases.
