Medical Device: Ventriculoperitoneal Shunt Tube

Description of the Medical Device

Poor circulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain causes hydrocephalus that presses the normal tissues. There are communicating hydrocephalus and obstructive hydrocephalus possibly caused by degeneration, clog, or diseases.

When to Use

The excessive cerebrospinal fluid in the brain is drained to reduce the pressure. Most patients are able to improve ventricle circulation and relieve the symptoms.

Possible Side Effects

  • Blockage in the tube, 17%-20% of incidence rate.
  • Insufficient drainage, 5%-10% of incidence rate.
  • Infection, 5%-7% of incidence rate.
  • Excessive drainage, about 5% of incidence rate.
  • Epilepsy, about 5% of incidence rate.
  • Intracranial hemorrhage, < 3% of incidence rate.

Post Surgery Care

  • Change the dressings on the wound regularly and keep the wound dry.
  • Consult with your physician or technicians about the adjustment of the valve before you are discharged from the hospital.
