Dementia is a group of symptoms (syndromes) caused by various brain disorders, which may affect memory, thinking, behavior, and daily living ability. It is often misunderstood as the aging process, and the sooner it is treated, the better!
Dementia severity level
- Phase 1 Mild Cognitive Impairment: Mild cognitive decline which does not affect daily lives.
- Phase 2 Mild Dementia: Short-term memory deficit, forgetting familiar words or names.
- Phase 3 Moderate Dementia: Severe memory impairment and difficulty in daily life.
- Phase 4 Severe Dementia: Unable to correctly recognize time and space, unable to take care of themselves in daily lives.
- Phase 5 Extremely Severe Dementia: Severely decreased cognitive and motor skills, able to recognize only spouse or primary caregiver.
- Phase 6 Telophase of Dementia: Loss of ability to respond to the others, have dialogues, and ultimately lose control of actions.
Dementia Risk Factors
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is currently the most widespread dementia globally, and "age" is the leading risk factor. When people are over 65, the risk of AD increases year by year, doubling every five years, so the prevention and treatment of AD are critical!
