A New, Safer Option for Patients with Bile and Pancreatic Related Diseases Duodenoscope Reduces the Risk of Infection

Wen-Hsin Huang, Director of the DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC CENTER OF ENDOSCOPY AND NOGRAPHY

Mrs. Zhang, a 47-year-old patient with Cholangiocarcinoma disease, visited the doctor at China Medical University Hospital for treatment. Considering the current pandemic, to reduce the risk of infection, Mrs. Zhang chose to have ERCP (Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography) surgery. Wen-Hsin Huang, the Director of the Diagnostic and Therapeutic Center of Endoscopy and Nography, finished the surgery successfully with the duodenoscope. Mrs. Zhang recovered well after the surgery.

Another patient, Mr. Xu, who is 70 years old and has common bile duct stones combined with multiple chronic diseases, had ERCP surgery to remove common bile duct stones.

According Wen-Hsin Huang, the duodenoscope is used in ERCP surgery to enter the major duodenal papilla, which is the opening of the Cholangiopancreatic duct. A catheter is then put into the Cholangiopancreatic duct via the lumens of the endoscope, infusing contrast media to make the lesion in the Cholangiopancreatic duct visible for diagnosis and further treatment. It is the most frequently used ERCP surgery to treat bile and pancreatic related diseases.

He also states that experts advise those who are immunocompromised, or high-risk patients who are infected with Multidrug-resistant organisms (MDRO) to consider duodenoscope surgery since the risk of infection due to insufficient cleaning or sanitizing is lowered. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of the duodenoscope will reduce the risk of cross-infection between medical staff and patients.
