Global Recognition: Top Score in Smart Hospital Certification and The First HIMSS Davies Excellence Award Winner in Taiwan

HIMSS, a leading global society dedicated to Healthcare Information and Management Systems, includes esteemed organizational members such as top-tier medical institutions like the Mayo Clinic and Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.

In June 2023, our institution received much worldly recognition, the "HIMSS Davies Award of Excellence" for the outstanding achievements demonstrated through our three major smart healthcare platforms: the "Intelligent Anti-microbial Platform (i.A.M.S.)," " All-day Emergency AMI Smart Platform," and the "Smart Pulmonary Guardian ARDiTeX System."

Our leadership in smart healthcare was further cemented in January 2024 with exceptional results in the "Digital Health Indicator (DHI) Assessment," resulting in the highest global score.

Expertise and Intelligence: Enhancing Community Healthcare

In 2018, in response to the Taichung City Government's Livable City policy, our institution embraced the spirit of "taking from society, giving back to society." By leveraging medical expertise to connect with community resources, our team introduced the concept of local health stations. These stations provide services such as medical consultations for residents, daily health data measurement, preventive healthcare, case management and referral assistance, health lectures, and health promotion initiatives.

In 2020, in collaboration with the Yuan Bao Temple in the North District of Taichung City, we jointly established the first "Smart Health Promotion Center," integrating artificial intelligence and health management. We are extending our vision of a "Smart Hospital" into preventive care, contributing to creating a "Smart Community" and promoting public health as part of Taichung City Government's Smart City policy.

Four Key Core Development Plans for Smart Healthcare

The framework of our institution's smart healthcare development plan is illustrated in the following diagram, featuring four essential cores: Big Data - Cloud Platform, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Business Intelligence (BI), and Medical Internet of Things (IoT)

World-Class Healthcare Big Data and iHi Platform

Our hospital dedicated to building an AI-driven medical data ecosystem and establishing the world-class iHi Platform to advance smart healthcare. The iHi Platform integrates textual medical records, medical imaging (e.g., X-rays, CT scans, MRIs), biomedical signals (e.g., ECG, EEG), genetic data, and IoT-based personal physiological metrics (e.g., heart rate, blood pressure, blood sugar), as well as environmental data (e.g., air pollution and traffic noise) to provide a comprehensive view of patient health.

The platform consolidates 20 years of electronic medical records, environmental data from 3.5 million patients, and genetic data from 400,000 individuals. By combining phenotypic, genomic, and environmental data, it drives medical research, supports the development of AI and business intelligence, assists the government in formulating health policies, and safeguards the health of Taiwanese citizens.

Medical AI — Establishing AI Outpatient Services to Support Precision Healthcare

Since March 1, 2019, our institution has launched AI outpatient services, initially implemented in eight departments, including Cardiology, Nephrology, Respiratory Medicine, Breast Surgery, Pediatrics, Ophthalmology, Precision Medicine, and Health Screening Center. Pioneering integration of AI services such as bone age diagnosis, chromosomal abnormality diagnosis, ECG anomaly detection, chest X-rays, diabetic retinopathy screening, and kidney disease prediction into outpatient services, our initiative assists physicians in diagnosing more efficiently and accurately. This allows physicians to allocate more time for patient care and focus on interpreting patient information, ultimately providing comprehensive and improved healthcare services.

Medical BI — Efficient Monitoring of Medication Usage and Reduced Infection Risk

Our institution actively participates in healthcare business intelligence (BI). Beyond enhancing operational efficiency, this strategy aims to elevate patient safety and medical quality with direct application in diagnosing and monitoring drug usage. Such integration enhances physicians' diagnostic capabilities, effectively tracks medication progress, reduces the likelihood of infections, and successfully utilizes healthcare BI technology to save the lives of intensive care unit patients.

HiThings- Medical Internet of Things (IoT)

Intensive Care Units (ICUs) are among the most high-pressure hospital environments, with healthcare professionals facing burnout rates nearing 40%. To address this, CMUH developed HiThings Tele-ICU, an Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT) empower system designed to enhance patient outcomes while reducing caregiver burden.

At its core, HiThings Tele-ICU processes real-time data from up to 60,000 medical devices, seamlessly integrating medical records, imaging, prescriptions, and treatment plans while securely storing data for 10 years. Its digital-twin and 3D human models provide dynamic physiological insights, supporting faster, more precise clinical decisions.

The system’s AI-driven predictive tools assist in diagnosing and managing ARDS, sepsis, myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, and more, enabling earlier interventions when necessary. High-definition video systems ensure remote consultations and real-time access to patient data via mobile devices, allowing continuous monitoring even when clinicians are off-site.

Deployed across five ICU units—respiratory, cardiac, surgical, pediatric, and neonatal—HiThings Tele-ICU has yielded significant improvements: 5.4% reduction in ICU mortality, 18.9% decrease in ARDS mortality, and 17.6% increase in one-year survival for MRSA sepsis patients. Operational efficiencies include a 44% reduction in data retrieval time, 60% less medical documentation time, and 62% faster shift handovers, allowing clinicians to focus more on direct patient care.

Recognized with the 2024 AI Integration Award by The Storm Media, National SNQ Award, and HIMSS Davies Award, HiThings Tele-ICU sets a new benchmark for AI-driven critical care.

Build advanced healthcare through intelligent processes and supporting systems.

Focused on the core of healthcare, we actively promote Generative AI-driven intelligent healthcare. In July 2023, we collaborated with Microsoft to develop the Generative Healthcare Intelligent System (gHi system), the world's first Chinese-English-intermixed speech-based generative intelligent healthcare system. Through healthcare experts' dictation, the AI engine rapidly generates medical records, enhancing the efficiency of healthcare documentation. In December 2023, we partnered with Google Cloud to establish a comprehensive "AI-enabled Physician" system, assisting healthcare experts in disease diagnosis, treatment planning, patient education, and medical education research. We initiated the Chemotherapy Assistant which enabled nurses to instantly record medication side effects and provide personalized educational advice, aiding medical professionals in swiftly accessing accurate information and addressing patients' educational queries.

Establishing a comprehensive intelligent healthcare process, we plan to implement systems covering various medical stages, including outpatient services, emergency care, surgeries, inpatient care, and transitioning to long-term care or home care. The proposed systems include Smart Medical Consultation, Smart Outpatient Services, Smart Emergency Care, Smart Operating Rooms, Smart Intensive Care Units, Smart Wards, Smart Long-Term Care, and Smart Telemedicine.

Additionally, we will supplement these with medical technology, nursing, and administrative healthcare support systems, planning to implement Smart Laboratory, Smart Pathology, Smart Imaging, Smart Pharmacy, Smart Nursing, Healthcare Information Systems, and Smart Administration, aiming to construct a comprehensive intelligent hospital. This approach ensures the implementation of cutting-edge medical service paradigms across all facets of healthcare delivery.
