Under the influence of Vietnamese girl Nguyen Thi Loan who received successful treatment of lower extremity lymphedema by CMUH, Little girl Li who also suffered from the same disease is following the footstep of Nguyen Thi Loan with courage and came to CMUH from afar. Nguyen Thi Loan gave her favorite bedside stuffed rabbit toy to the Vietnamese 12-year-old little girl Li new to the same ward and encouraged little girl Li who was also troubled by the giant legs caused by mutation. Sponsor of Nguyen Thi Loan’s medical expenses, Hong Fu Industrial Group and CMUH International Medical Service Center Superintendent Hung-Chi Chen blew the candle and cut the cake with the two Vietnamese girls in witness of this memorable moment.
Nguyen Thi Loan was hospitalized in Taiwan for one year and can communicate for routines in life in Chinese. The welfare press conference reached a climate when Nguyen Thi Loan recited the Chinese poem, “From the pavilion one sees the sun setting behind the mountains, unrelentingly towards the sea the Yellow River flows …” 13-year-old Vietnamese girl Nguyen Thi Loan would be discharged from the hospital and return to Vietnam on July 26, completing this journey of medical treatment.
Cross-Division team shows robust strength in the completion of severely complex reconstruction easily
Hung-Chi Chen’s severely complex reconstruction surgery is a featured competence of CMUH International Medical Service Center. Nguyen Thi Loan suffered the lymphedema by four mutations in spleen, lower extremity, rectum, anus, and perineum. The use of tourniquet for surgery was prohibited while the adoption of microscopy was necessary to separate all small vessels in order to avoid massive hemorrhage. Moreover, various factors related to the life safety of patients from the surgery process require much attention, which challenged the competence of CMUH’s robust team.
Li has been hospitalized in June recently also suffered from lymphedema by severe mutation. The treatment is divided into four phases, where damaged spleen by severe mutation has been excised at Phase I in advance to reduce intestinal tract suppression. Next, Li completed the reconstruction surgery on the calves at Phase II. Now Li has great appetite and shows complexion. Then LI will undergo thigh and hip surgeries at Phase II and the perineum surgery at Phase IV, which are scheduled for completion by September.

However “CMUH is capable and confident in the completing the surgery with success.” The successful surgery of Nguyen Thi Loan has drawn attention and sensation from Vietnam, which propelled Li and her family to receive the surgery in CMUH from Vietnam at own expenses. CMUH International Medical Service Center continue to pass down love and expand medical services. Hung-Chi Chen said with sentiment: “Nguyen Thi Loan’s wish to ride a bicycle, have fun with others and help others as a doctor could be realized eventually because of the Hong Fu Humanitarian Medical Project. We appreciate Hong Fu’s local feedback and the bright side of example of corporate responsibility and value.
