How to determine whether a child or adolescent is obese can be done by calculating the Body Mass Index (BMI):
- BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m2)
- You can divide the weight (kg) by the height (m) twice to get the value. The BMI of a child or adolescent is determined by gender and age based on the following criteria. A BMI greater than the standard for overweight or obesity is considered overweight or obese. For example, a boy aged 6 years and 5 months with a BMI of 17.1 is overweight. A girl aged 8 years and 11 months with a BMI of 21.2 is considered obese. It should also be noted if the BMI is less than the standard value of underweight.
- When a child or adolescent is considered overweight and obese, with half a year as a dividing point and the median age adopted. For example, 7 years old means 6 years and 10 months to 7 years and 3 months, 7.5 years old means 7 years and 4 months to 7 years and 9 months.
