2024/1/2

Male infertility

  • Male infertility refers to a male's inability to cause pregnancy in a fertile female a year later when the couple have active sexual life in the absence of contraceptive measures. Male infertility contributes to 50% of all infertility cases. In many couples, however, both male and female factors are present.

Causes of male infertility?

  • Including varicocele, unknown causes, reproductive tract obstruction, cryptorchidism, immune factors, endocrine disorders, ejaculation disorders, etc.

Regular body care

  • Do not wear tight pants: tight pants can cause an increase in scrotal temperature, which will interfere with sperm production.
  • Do not take a bath or shower with excessively hot water: increased scrotal temperature can affect sperm production.
  • Do not put a laptop on your lap: increased scrotal temperature can affect sperm production.
  • Reduce exposure to chemical volatiles and air pollution sources: work environment exposure and daily contact with various chemicals, including dyes, volatiles, solvents, cleaners and pesticides, will affect the development of germ cells, resulting in abnormal function of germ cells.
  • Quit smoking and drinking: alcohol can lead to hormonal imbalances that reduce the number and quality of sperms, while smoking can reduce sperm counts and sperm motility.
  • Exercise and lose weight: studies have shown that sperm concentration drops 26% when body mass index (BMI) is over 25.
  • Moderate adjustment of work pressure: high work pressure, long working hours, and long-term accumulation of mental stress affect internal health and sperm concentration and vitality.

Diet precautions

  • Eat less processed meat with saturated fat: avoid the influence of lipophilic estrogen-like hormones on sperm production.
  • Get enough protein.
  • Get foods that are high in zinc, selenium, manganese, and arginine: fish, shellfish, shrimp, crab, nuts, sesame, pumpkin seeds.
  • Appropriate folic acid intake: dark green vegetables such as spinach, water spinach, leek and legumes could reduce the proportion of abnormal chromosomes in sperms.
  • Appropriate amounts of vitamin C, vitamin E and lycopene: reduce the proportion of sperm DNA damage.

Which TCM helps with male infertility

  • Low sperm count: nourish kidney yin with commonly used drugs such as Radix Polygoni Multiflori, Fructus Lycii, Semen Cuscutae, Fructus Ligustri Lucidi, Rhizoma polygonati, etc. Reduced survival time of sperm, with low sperm motility: enrich kidney yang, with commonly used drugs such as Radix Morindae Officinalis, Herba Epimedii, Curculigo orchioides, Herba Cistanches.
  • TCM, such as Radix Morindae Officinalis, Herba Cistanches, Fructus Rubi, Herba Epimedii, Semen Cuscutae, Fructus Lycii, Radix Astragali, and Bu-Zhong-Yi-Qi-Tang, is helpful for testosterone secretion, spermatozoa activity and antioxidation.

Acupoint massage

  • Qihai: 1.5 B-cun inferior to the center of the umbilicus, on the anterior median line.
  • Guanyuan: The acupoint is close to the place where men store essence and women store blood, which is the key point of life. It is on the lower abdomen, 3 B-cun inferior to the center of the umbilicus, on the anterior median line.

Male infertility is not equal to sexual dysfunction

  • Most patients have no symptoms except erectile dysfunction and abnormal ejaculation.
