Etiology
The most common cause is viral infection (e.g. adenovirus and coronavirus), followed by bacterial infection, most of which is caused by group A β-hemolytic streptococcus.
Symptoms
Symptoms occur fairly quickly, starting with a sore throat, fever, physical discomfort, swallowing pain, and sometimes accompanied by metastatic earache, neck lymphadenopathy and tenderness, back and limb pain, chills, and hoarseness.
Diagnosis
Swollen and painful tonsils. Acute suppurative tonsillitis may develop if there are scattered or dissolved white or yellow purulent exudates on the surface. There is a lot of mucus in the mouth. The soft jaw and uvula are red and swollen. The cervical and abdominal lymph glands on both sides are swollen and tender.
Treatment
- Supportive therapy: Bed rest, drinking a large amount of boiled water, having a throat smear for bacterial culture and sensitivity test according to the condition. If there is no comorbidity, recovery is expected within 7 to 12 days.
- Treatment with antibiotics (e.g. penicillin).
- Analgesics are used to relieve pain and bring down fever.
