Purpose of Examination
- To monitor the content of oxygen and carbon dioxide in arterial blood to evaluate the gas exchange in the lungs.
- To evaluate the acid-base balance in vivo.
- To monitor the severity of disease progression as a reference for treatment.
- To help medical staff evaluate the effectiveness of respiratory therapy for patients.
Indications
Respiratory disorders, dysfunction of cardiovascular system, renal dysfunction, shock, etc.
| Item | Normal values | Clinical significance |
| pH | 7.35 ~ 7.45 | Acid-base equilibrium in the blood |
| PaO2 | 80 ~ 100 mmHg | Oxygen levels in arterial blood |
| PaCO2 | 35 ~ 45 mmHg | Patients' ventilation capacity |
| HCO3 | 24 ± 4 mEq/L | Bicarbonate levels in the blood |
| BE | 0 ± 2 mEq/L | Acid-base equilibrium |
| SaO2 | 97 ~ 98 % | Oxygen carrying capacity of heme |
Comorbidity
- Causes of comorbidity: frequent extraction, improper puncture, or misoperation.
- Common comorbidities: hematoma, tissue damage, thrombosis, poor peripheral blood circulation, numbness, infection, etc.
- After a puncture, the patient should be assisted or his family members asked to apply pressure to the puncture site for at least 5 minutes to stop the bleeding and check for any comorbidity.
