Department of Metabolism focuses on the treatments of diseases caused by hormone-based changes. In Taiwan, the related specialty medical societies are the Endocrine Society of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the Diabetes Association of Republic of China (Taiwan), and the Department is the training unit for specialists. In recent years, with the increase of obesity population and population aging, diabetes, endocrine hypertension, hyperlipidemia, hyperuricemia, thyroid abnormalities, osteoporosis, metabolic syndrome endocrine changes caused by aging, and related diseases have become the emerging precision medical treatment.
In terms of diabetes treatment, the Department groups physicians, nurses, health educators, nutritionists, clinical pharmacists, and the experts in various fields to provide comprehensive services for patients with diabetes. In terms of thyroid cancer treatment, it collaborates with the experts in Departments of Surgery, Pathology, Radiology, Oncology, Nuclear Medicine and other disciplinary to improve the overall effectiveness of treatment.
For the past thirty years ago, Chief Chwen-Tzuei Chang and Chief Ching-Chu Chen has led to construct the solid foundation of the Department. During this period, the Department established Diabetes Health Education Classroom recognized by the Bureau of Health Promotion to serve a number of diabetic patients in the central Taiwan. The Diabetes Patient Association was also built on 2003 July to organize various kinds of health education speeches or tourism activities. In 2015, the Thyroid Cancer Patient Association was built to provide more active services. The CMUH is the qualified training hospital of the Endocrine Society and Diabetes Association of the Republic of China (Taiwan) for specialists.
