Benefits of Breastfeeding for Premature Infants 早產兒哺餵母乳的好處

2024/3/21

Premature infants are immature in digestion and absorption, so they must be provided with proper nutrients such as calories, proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals. The proteins, vitamins and minerals contained in the mother's breast milk are particularly in line with the premature baby's nutritional needs. Their breast milk is the best nutritional formula for premature infants at each growth stage. Breast milk is aimed at the physiological characteristics and nutritional needs of premature infants. Therefore, breast milk is a holy nutrient and the best medicine for them.

Benefits of breast milk

  • Increase immunity, reduce infection; SIgA immunoglobulin, growth factors and interferon can inhibit the growth of bacteria and viruses.
  • Breast milk is rich in whey protein for easy absorption and digestion, and can reduce acid reflux.
  • Breast milk contains special lipase and bile salt, which can promote fat digestion.
  • Breast milk is rich in lactose, which is conducive to the absorption of calcium and iron, as well as the growth of lactobacilli in the intestine, and can inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria.
  • Breast milk contains proper amounts of zinc, sodium, calcium, phosphorus and other minerals, which will not cause renal burden.
  • More DHA and AA are contained in the breast milk of mothers with preterm labor than that of mothers giving birth to a full-term baby, which can help the immature brain nerve growth and development of preterm infants.
  • Breast milk contains β-carotene, taurine and vitamin E, which can help the development of retinal nerves.
  • Breastfeeding is also an important factor in establishing a psychological connection and parent-child relationship. The mother has the opportunity to see the baby, touch it personally, and talk with it, which is beneficial and significant for both mother and premature infant. When a premature baby can grow and thrive through the mother's breast milk, she will also feel gratified.

How to maintain the secretion of milk?

  • Start pumping breast milk as early as possible when the child is in unstable condition and breastfeeding in person is not recommended. It is better to start pumping breast milk within 6 hours after delivery.
  • The number of pumping sessions will determine the amount of milk produced. It is advised to do it by hand or with an electric breast pump every 2-3 hours.
  • When your child is stable, try to let the baby suckle directly when your doctor suggests that you can breastfeed yourself. This can help the baby develop the ability to suck and stimulate the milk ejection reflex.

Milk preservation

  • The pumped milk can be stored at room temperature below 25℃ for 6-8 hours.
  • It can be stored for 5-8 days in the refrigerator at 0-4℃.
  • It can be kept in the freezer compartment for 3 months.
  • It can be stored for 6-12 months in a freezer with temperature below - 25 ℃.
