Home care after skin biopsy.
Preparation of Necessary Supplies
- Sterile cotton swab
- Saline
- Sterile gauze, breathable tape (buy hypoallergenic tape if skin is sensitive)
- Waterproof tape for bathing
- Medication as directed by physicians:
- Tetracycline ointment
- Gentamycin cream/ointment
- Spersin
Precautions
- Change the dressing at least once a day. Change it again if the wound gets dirty or wet.
- When taking a shower, apply waterproof tape to the wound to avoid getting wet and infection. Remove the tape immediately after the shower and change the dressing. Please note that the waterproof tape is made of airtight material and should not be applied to the wound for an extended period of time. It must be removed immediately after bathing.
- If the gauze sticks to the wound, rinse it with saline and then gently remove the gauze.
- Observe the wound: if there is any abnormal condition such as redness, swelling, heat, pain, bleeding, stitch shedding and secretion, please consult the doctor as soon as possible.
- Clean the wound gently to prevent the stitches from falling out.
- Avoid carrying heavy objects, stretching or pulling on the wound to prevent it from opening.
Dressing Change Procedures
- Wash your hands.
- Change the dressing: Moisten the sterile cotton swab with saline, and clean it from the inside out in a circular way to the outside of the wound for 2 to 3 cm. Use one wet sterile cotton swab at a time, three times in total.
- Clean the wound with a dry, sterile cotton swab.
- Apply the ointment to the wound with a dry, sterile cotton swab.
- Cover with new sterile gauze and tape.
- If the skin around the wound has an allergic rash due to the tape, use hypoallergenic one instead, and change the direction of the tape daily.
