Medical Device: Artificial Meninges
Description of the Medical Device
Artificial meninges are often used for patients with head trauma, intracranial hemorrhage, and severe cerebral edema caused by cerebrovascular event. Artificial meninges are used during partial crainectomy to cover up the brain surface and protect brain tissues.
When to Use
- Severe cerebral edema caused by head trauma.
- Increased intracranial pressure caused by the edema from intracranial hemorrhage.
- Expected severe cerebral edema after cerebrovascular event.
Possible Side Effects
- Epidural hematoma or hemorrhage, 7%-21% of incidence rate.
- Infection, 3%-5% of incidence rate.
- Brain collapse due to the loss of protection from the skull.
Care after the Procedure
- Change the dressing regularly to avoid infection.
