Possible Causes of Falls
- Anemia or postural hypotension.
- Confusion.
- Walking weakness caused by muscle and joint pain.
- Aging and limb weakness.
- A patient who is unaccompanied and left unattended.
- Dizziness and unstable gait caused by taking sleeping and sedative drugs.
- Not being familiar with the ward environment.
- Having a history of falls.
- Malnutrition, weakness, dizziness.
Precautionary Approaches
- To prevent falls, do not get out of bed immediately after dialysis for symptoms such as hypotension, dizziness and discomfort. Ask medical staff to assist you until the symptoms of discomfort are alleviated, and then gradually get out of bed. Wheelchair assistance is available in the dialysis room if necessary.
- If you need help and no family member is available, please inform the medical staff.
- For elderly patients and patients with mobility problems, family members should accompany them in and out of the dialysis room before and after dialysis in order to maintain patient safety.
- If you feel dizzy or weak after taking the medicine, you should inform the medical staff.
- If the companion is not at the bedside, keep the necessary items within easy reach of the patient.
- To protect the patient’s safety, please pull up the bed rail and give protective restraint when necessary.
Home Care
- The corridor from the bedroom to the toilet should be free from obstacles and be fully illuminated.
- The bathroom and bathtub are equipped with handrails and non-slip mats.
- Wear clothes of the right size.
- Wear non-slip shoes.
- Avoid rapid changes in posture to prevent postural hypotension.
- In the event of an unexplained fall, whether injured or not, return to the hospital for examination.
- The height of the bed should be maintained at 40 to 65cm, with protective equipment provided as far as possible.
