Name of Medical Device

Dental implant

Description

Dental implants are the third set of dentures given by modern technology to reconstruct missing teeth without damaging the real teeth. The dental root is made of titanium metal, which has excellent compatibility with the human body. After being implanted into the alveolar bone, the denture will be connected to it after bone integration, which looks and functions like the real tooth.

When to Use

  • When reconstructing the missing tooth area.
  • In orthodontic treatment, when it is more efficient to move the teeth to the desired position.

Possible Side Effects

  • Placement of dental implants is an operation, so there may be complications such as wound bleeding, swelling and infection.
  • Dental implants implanted in the alveolar bone will not decay, but if not maintained, there will be periodontal disease like real teeth. Therefore, it is important to make routine follow-up visits and pay attention to oral hygiene.

Postoperative Care

  • If there is slight bleeding in the wound after operation, it is a normal phenomenon and patients need not be alarmed.
  • Be sure to eat carefully before the anesthetic subsides to avoid biting your lips and tongue.
  • Do not eat a diet that is too hot, too hard or too stimulating for 7 days after surgery. Do not use straws.
  • Rinse your mouth gently after eating to clean the wound and prevent inflammation. Brush your teeth in the area outside the wound, but be careful not to touch the wound. Never rinse your mouth or spit forcefully.
  • The swelling and pain are obvious within 2 days after the operation. Apply intermittently a compress (20 minutes for ice compress, 20 minutes for rest) with ice cubes to the operation site to ease the pain and swelling.
  • At the return visit one week after the operation, the wound will be examined and the stitches removed. Do not apply any pressure to the wound (e.g. tongue licking, finger compression) to avoid affecting wound healing and postoperative osseointegration.
  • If sinus augmentation is performed during the operation, avoid sneezing and blowing your nose too hard and never smoke or swim one week after the operation. Please learn to take care of the wound after surgery. If you have any questions, please consult your doctor or nurse for relevant information.
