Prevention and Care of Ascendant Hyperactivity of Liver (Hypertension) 肝陽上亢(高血壓)的預防保健

Hypertension Control Standards (over 18 years old)

  • Blood pressure 120 / 80 mmHg is the normal and average blood pressure.
  • Blood pressure between 130 ~ 139 / 85 ~ 89 mmHg is suspected of Hypertension.
  • Blood pressure greater than 140 / 90 mmHg is known as Hypertension.

Types of Hypertension

  • Primary Hypertension: Unknown reason and could be related to family genetics, accounting for 90%.
  • Secondary Hypertension: Partial performance of certain diseases and could be temporary or permanent, accounting for 10% in patients with hypertension. Such patients will not have increased blood pressure once the diseases have been cured.

Symptoms of Hypertension

Headache, dizziness, poor vision, blurry, declined memory, insomnia, tachypnea, tinnitus, weak hearing, aching neck, palpitation, nausea.

Likely Complications of Hypertension

  • Brain: Increased blood pressure leads to damaged vessel wall and even hardens or fractures the vessels or forming embolism that causes strokes.
  • Heart: Increased heart burden, causing angina pectoris, cardiac arrhythmia, myocardial infarction, and even death.
  • Kidney: Could trigger arteriosclerosis of kidney, atrophy of kidney, renal dysfunction, and uremia.

Prevention and Control of Hypertension

  • Patients with hypertension should measure the blood pressure every day and regularly take health checkup.
  • Patients should drink less tea and coffee. Cut down smoking and drinking to avoid stimulating ascending blood pressure.
  • Engage in certain and continuous exercises to improve the blood circulation of the body and health function.
  • Prevent constipation and keep bowel movement unobstructed.
  • Avoid taking shower with water that is too cold or hot.
  • Maintain ideal weight and control food intake. Persons with obesity should lose weight.
  • Take fixed amount of medicine at regular hours.
  • Maintain adequate sleep and relax the body and mind.

Food and Drinks Instruction

  • Avoid eating food with high content of cholesterol,. Including organs (such as brain, liver, heart, and kidney), crab roe fish roe, panna cotta, butter, and cheese.
  • Eat food low in salt. Reduce food with high content but undetectable such as vermicelli, oil noodle, sweet and salty pickled plum, sweet and salty cookies, braised, pickled, smoked food (such as ham, sausage, and smoked chicken).
  • Choose vegetable oil such as olive oil, sunflower seed oil, and avoid eating animal oil such as butter, lard, and chicken skin. 
  • Use vinegar, lemon, apple, and pineapple to replace salt, MSG and other condiment.
  • The therapy of hypertension requires nourishing the kidney ying and deepen the liver yang mostly and food should also reflect this principle, namely light food. Pay attention to food with high content of protein, low fat, low salt, and multi-vitamin.

Food Therapy

  • Celery Salad: Take 50 ~ 150 gram of celery, rinse and cut into sections. Blanch with boiled water before removing from the pot. Add some seasoning, mix well and serve. This dish calms down the liver heat.
  • Jellyfish Salad: Take 50 ~ 150 grams of jelly fish, rinse and julienne. Rinse with cold boiled water. Add condiment to season, mix well and serve. The dish nourishes the liver and kidney with benefits to the strength. 
  • Sea cucumber sweet thickened soup: Take 30 grams of sea cucumber, some sugar rock and cook until tender. Eat with empty stomach to nourish the liver.
  • Spinach mix: Take fresh spinach 100 grams, rinse and blanch in boiled water and remove instantly.  Mix with sesame oil after cooked to nourish the liver and blood, and replenish blood.
  • Black and white fungus thickened soup: Take black and white fungus 5 grams each add some sugar rock and cook until tender. Serve before sleep, which can nourish the liver and the lung.
  • Corn Kernel Porridge: Take corn kernel 100 grams, rinse and add sufficient water to cook into thickened porridge. The dish can condition and regulate the spleen and stomach. Corn contains unsaturated fatty acid which can become the long-term main course for patients with cardiovascular disease, working as antagonism for arteriosclerosis.
